The Arts Funding Regime can Go Fuck Themselves.
- low value grants waste artist time. it is more effective to work for $2000 than to waste time and effort researching and submitting proposals.
- proposals are tied to agreed upon outcomes. hardly a conducive frame work for innovative development.
- grants are often given by commercial entities, providing very cheap advertising for the entities.
- the acceptance of these grants legitimises the role of the entities in the community - in fact, they are leeches stealing and setting the value of the commodity 'artist'.
- artists careers and psyches are founded upon the acceptance they may find from funding bodies.
- high value grants intended on representing the nation, actually stifle creativity and funnel monies into inefficient expenditure patterns. they misrepresent social culture and thus hinder free intellectual development.
- arts administration costs money. arts administrators are paid more than most artists. is this the 'arts' culture that we want to build?
Solutions
- give medium value grants openly for a limited period to emerging artists.
- provide a free and diverse arts education at the tertiary level.
- provide open access, professional gallery space.
